Tutorials
Partially Pretied:
Here's my tutorial, where I show my favorite tricks, including how to tighten the wrap over your shoulder so that the pass over baby gets tightened as well – this is important if you don't want a saggy carry.
One thing I do not do well in this tutorial is put baby in. A better way to put baby in is to reach your hand through the wrap and guide baby's legs through.
This tutorial by Babywearing Faith shows a better way to put baby in, as well as also showing careful tightening of the top rail.
Wrapped Around Baby:
I haven't found too many tutorials showing this method... but it really is very convenient if you don't want to put your baby down! Here's a tutorial by WearingRawAndPure showing how to start a FWCC like this. (For the rest of the steps, I'd follow another tutorial.)
Tips and Tricks
- Leave just enough space. You need less space than you think! The initial pocket shouldn't be sagging way down your body.
- Don't pull too much wrap into the seat. Your bottom rail should be practically straight between baby's knees. It doesn't need to go high up.
- Reach BEHIND you to tighten.
- When tightening the horizontal pass top rail, lift the rail off your shoulder and keep your hand behind your back.
- When strand by strand tightening on your shoulder, reach behind you for slack.
- Tighten the inner half of the X on your back first. If you tighten the outer half first, it'll trap the slack in the first one and make it hard to tighten.
- Do a V-pull. It'll really help prevent sag. I show this at around 2:10 in my tutorial.
- Place the bunched cross passes right at the knees. If you don't, they may shift up, creating slack, then sag.
Wiggle-worthy?
- Good for mild but not serious leaning.
- Good for mild but not serious leg straightening.
Common Issues
- Top rail slack:
- Make sure to tighten by taking your top rail off the shoulder and pulling BEHIND you.
- If you find top rail slack after tying, you can untie to a half-knot in the back, and feed the slack around to the half-knot, then out of the half-knot. To do that, feed the slack to your armpit, then to the top of your shoulder, then through the bunched passes to your back.
- Diggy top rail on top of shoulders:
- Don't overtighten the top rail. You want to make sure that there's no visible slack, not tighten it so that it feels like a rope stretched tight.
- Don't leave too big a pocket at the beginning. The middle of your wrap may be loose and not supporting weight.
- Pay attention to your strand-by-strand tightening. Watch my tutorial, where I show how to reach behind you to find slack in the horizontal pocket.
- Floppy head:
- Make sure you have no top rail slack.
- If top rail is tight, but there's still head flop, try bunching a bit of wrap on top -- don't pull ALL the width into the seat.
- You could also try tucking a washcloth into the top rail (be careful not to put too much pressure on baby's neck if you do this.)
- Carry sags after wearing:
- Don't leave too large a pocket at the beginning.
- Do a good V-pull before doing the bunched cross passes. This is shown at around 2:10 in my tutorial.
- If you have a very heavy baby, consider switching to FWCC with spread passes, or another more supportive carry.
- Underarm dig:
- Make sure your top rail isn't overtightenened.
- This carry is hard on the armpits even done well. You may wish to try another carry, such as kangaroo, front cross carry, or front double hammock.
- My wrap is too short!
- Try a shorter variant, such a FWCC tied under bum (TUB) or short FWCC tied at shoulder (TAS).
